A First Grade Week with Frog and Toad

A Week with Frog and Toad
As part of our Journey's curriculum, we read," Frog and Toad Fly a Kite." We based the rest of our week around the theme of Frog and Toad, and kites. I loved this week "almost" as much as penguin week. I loved reading Frog and Toad as a kid, so it was extra special to me.

On Tuesday, after reading Frog and Toad Fly a Kite, we talked about how we can help friends when they are frustrated, and I used that as a writing prompt.

Then it was onto making our own kites:

Very simple, we drew designs on a legal sized piece of paper, stapled, and added string at the top, and party streamers at the bottom. They were a huge hit!

Next, we read Frog and Toad are Friends, and Frog and Toad Forever, and discussed the characteristics of Frog and Toad and made a chart..thanks to Pinterest.

On Thursday..after we reread, "Frog and Toad Fly a Kite," several times with partners, the summarized the beginning, middle and end in their own words, and illustrated each section:

We do the Daily 5 in our class, so everyday, kids read to self, or read to someone. To mix it up today, we read our Frog and Toad books with a new, "friend." (aka, the puppets that they rarely get to use :-) )

Finally, to top it off, we had a Frog and Toad tea party today ( Frog and Toad drink tea in "Frog and Toad are Friends")  Students made invitations to give to administrators, specialists and other teachers who would be able to stop by. I made iced tea for the kids, and hot tea for the adults. We practiced "good manners," while sipping our tea, and eating our bisquits with honey.

It was the cutest thing! A couple of my students told me that today was the best day of their lives..because of the tea party.

Songs and Poems that we sang:

Five Little Tadpoles (Poem)

Five little tadpoles swimming near the shore.
The first one said, “Let’s swim some more.”
The second one said, “Let’s rest awhile.”
The third one said, “Swimming makes me smile.”
The fourth one said, “My legs are growing long.”
The fifth one said, “I’m getting very strong.”
Five little tadpoles will soon be frogs.
They’ll jump from the water and sit on logs.

Little Green Frog

(Action Song!  Actions in [ ]'s)
Mm, Mm went the little green frog one day,

[stick tongue out on 2nd "Mm"]
Mm, Mm went the little green frog,

[stick tongue out on 2nd "Mm"]
Mm, Mm went the little green frog one day,

[stick tongue out on 2nd "Mm"]
And they all went Mm, Mm, Aahh!

[stick tongue out on 2nd "Mm" and open mouth wide for Aahh!]

But!
We all know frogs go,
 [CLAP]
Lahdeedahdeedah!
 [CLAP]
Lahdeedahdeedah!
 [CLAP]
Lahdeedahdeedah!
We all know frogs go,
 [CLAP]
Lahdeedahdeedah!
They don't go
[stick tongue out on 2nd "Mm" and open mouth wide for Aahh!]
